Fighting as southpaw.

I did a search and there is very little material on here for fighting as a southy. LEt try and get a thread going that gathers up all the tips and tricks to fight with a right lead. I will start with a few.

Keep your lead foot ouside his lead foot. this will allow you to better set up angles.

Straight lefts are some of the best techniques. be sure to cirlce away from his straight right. If you are circling to your right and he is following, he will move into your straight left while you avoid his straight right.

Will think of more when I have finished my coffee. Please add as many as you can think of. Lets make this the definitive Southpaw thread

Jab at the orthodox opponent's right hand. Most people are taught to parry the jab with their left hand, regardless of lead. Jabbing the opponent's right hand tends cause opponents to reach for the parry and lets you hook off the jab or feint a jab and nail them with the hook.

Occasionally, circle left and bait the opponent to lead with his right. Time the cross, drop step, come over their right hand with your left.

whenever we work on southpaw stuff at my gym the combo that the instructor always shows is Jab, hook, hook, Cross, Kick. the way it works is you throw the jab and then start throwing light hooks as you circle to the right and when he turns to face you, you throw a cross. if hes out of range for the cross, immediately throw a left kick, preferably to the body

Lunge forward with a huge cross. Then drop your hands to slip the counter jab, bob under the cross and slip waaaay backwards to dodge the hook. Follow up with a quick left hand.

Utilize middle kicks to the body a lot!!! Even if they are blocked with the arm, they do a tremendous amount of damage. If they don't block, SMACK!! Direct shot to the liver.

Honestly, a southpaw thread pops up every week on this forum, but I have no problem with one of the Mods sticky-ing this.

Tips (assuming you are fighting an orthodox stance opponent)
The main tip for fighting as a southpaw is that every strength you have on your opponent, your opponent has on you: straight rear hand punches, high kicks, neutralize the jab, etc. If you think you have an advantage because your opponents aren't used to fighting southpaws, eventually you will meet one who knows how to fight a lefty and you will be at the disadvantage because you are not used to training with people who know how to fight southpaws.

Fighting against an othrodox fighter also opens up kicks to the inside of the thigh. I like to throw a lead leg kick to the outside of the thigh (this is very light) and use it to plant my foot well outside his lead leg. Then I follow with a 1, 2 and a very hard leg kick to the inside of the thigh.

I was hoping we could take all that information, put it one place and add it to one of the stick technique threads.
