Making the transition from boxing to muay thai/kickboxing

Hi guys,

is there anyone else who is/has been in the same boat??? Im generally finding it difficult with balance and co ordination in my lower body....im worried that ill never completely make the transition and its starting to be a little downheartening. Ive been doing Muay Thai on/off from around November, and i try to practice at home and i still suck.

Is it possible that this transition can be made? I know that its easier for people who come from kickboxing to boxing ie Hatton and Wlad Klitschko, but has anyone ever been successful from the other way

Thanks

standard kickboxing or french kickboxing will make the transition easier. thai is harder to switch to, but it can be done

One of the guys I am training with comes from a boxing background. He tells me kinda what you said.

The solution (in progress) - he's been playing a lot of soccer to loosen up his kicks and increase lower body agility. In addition yoga a couple nights a week for general flexibility. (I know a surprisingly high number of boxers who do yoga) Maybe you can do the same!

But yeah, I bet you having some fun playing tennis or soccer on the side will help you out

I wouldn't think it's easier to go from kickboxing to boxing. Boxing is the American martial art, and most of the original masters who brought Asian martial arts to America, would have done boxing while in the army/navy, or college. And many of the American kickboxers in that golden age of kickboxing started out as boxers.

i started doing a TMA & kickboxing and our sifu was very adamant about footwork - we spent a good part of our classes just on footwork.

when i took up boxing as a complete newbie, my trainer told me it usually takes anywhere between a month or three to get peoples co-ordination right but because of my prior training in kickboxing, he could tell off the bat that we could go straight into pad work.

my recommendation is - watch boxing, look at the footwork the pro's use and try to emulate that as best possible - eventually your trainer will get your feet right but dont wait for it, practice.
