i started doing a TMA & kickboxing and our sifu was very adamant about footwork - we spent a good part of our classes just on footwork.
when i took up boxing as a complete newbie, my trainer told me it usually takes anywhere between a month or three to get peoples co-ordination right but because of my prior training in kickboxing, he could tell off the bat that we could go straight into pad work.
my recommendation is - watch boxing, look at the footwork the pro's use and try to emulate that as best possible - eventually your trainer will get your feet right but dont wait for it, practice.
