The danger of... sparring?

Can saprring cause serious damage to your brain? I know Boxing is dangerous because of the head shots, Peter Aerts ended up punch drunk.
But does it only occur on proffesional levels? Some Boxers died a few hours after a fight.

Has anyone heard of people fading away, or symptoms after to many head shots when sparring?

In short how can we know if combat sports are not made for us, because it can cause serious damage to some, right from the start?

Word. If you're scared of getting yourself hurt then this isn't for you. If you love what you do then don't be afraid to do it.

??? Anyway, thanks for the input, I do sparr, but I wondered if some people get the effects a lot faster, or maybe its all about getting those brain scans, I dont htink I need one.

And no guys Im not scared and I love it, but I like to take my precautions.
If you can do it smart why not.

I don't mean to hijack your thread but is Muay Thai sparring less dangerous than boxing since you don't always go 100% and aren't solely targeting the head?

As for the OP's question, professional boxers aren't the only ones who suffer brain damage. My old boxing coach fought as an amateur and ended up punchy and lost his hearing.

I would have to say no to the MT question.

The fact is with MT fighting and sparring, your taking shots all over the body, maybe 60% of shots go to the head, the rest go to the body and legs.
Also, boxing you take hundreds and hundreds of shots in a fight, whereas with a lot of Thai boxing fights you might really only get hit a few times (and then might get knocked out, but a single KO shot IMO is much much less damaging then lots of smaller shots)

You seem to be the first type. Just because others show some concern about their long-term health and welfare doesn't make them pussies.

Some people on this thread must already be suffering--anyone who's glad a guy gets brain damaged is wrong. It's a detriment to combat sports and an argument for having them banned and having parents prevent their children from doing it. If you really enjoy these sports, trying to mitigate this danger is a good idea. And like the original poster, "yes" I've sparred hundreds of rounds--boxing and kickboxing.

Here's some info, but not a good answer on whether headgear and 16 oz gloves are enough protection. Might give you the term to look further, though.
