Benefit of speed bag/ double end bag?

How often do you use these pieces of equipment?
What benefits do you feel they bring?

Timing, accuracy, but like anything else these attributes can be trained and brought to the surface with other methods. These happen to be affordable more often than not and time tested.

I despise people who go on and on about how they feel the speed-bag is useless. Often citing exercises that don't work at all in the same way a speed bag does. I'd be willing to wager they don't use the speed bag properly and thus, don't feel any benefit. But when done right, it works on everything from punching endurance, to rhythm, to breathing pace, to foot movement while punching, to the ability to change pace through the course of a round of Fighting.

Speed bag is typically done at the end of a workout as well, when arm fatigue has already set in. It shouldn't be hit robotically either. Here's a robot doing it:

YouTube - John Duddy Workout 3 of 3

Back all stiff, no fluid arm-movement, no head-movement, no foot movement.

Here's a guy who can box working the speed bag:

YouTube - Bojado on the Speedbag

Double-end bag? Here, you're looking for about 3:52 or so:

YouTube - shane mosley training double end bag

Now I've seen people post here that mitts should be able to replace both of these apparatus. I highly disagree. Anyone ever seen someone hit mitts at the pace Bojado works the speed bag and Mosley works the double-end at full speed? It's not very often both the catcher and thrower of punches can keep that up.

It should also be said that the double end bag can be an invaluable tool when training to fight a certain fighters style. You can adjust the bag to be shorter or taller, and get it into a quicker rhythm or a slower rhythm depending on who you are fighting.

I use the double end bag and speed bag every session for about two rounds at the end. I feel my jab has improved after using the doubleend bag.

Double End Bag - Fluidity of combinations, and timing punches. For instance on the double end bag, i like to fire my straight left after a combination, shoulder roll, then time it again to hit another straight left.

Speed Bag- When you see fighters with their hands down in the 4th round, its probably because they dont put in work on that speed bag. Hitting the speed bag before and after a good workout will help your muscles be able to hold your hands up long after they are fatiqued.

most people start hitting these bags and obviously at first can't hit them and feel a little stupid.
they end up looking around to see whose watching them stuff up and feeling deflated they move on to a heavy bag. I urge people to have patience and take the time to learn to use the 2 bags correctly because they are invaluable pieces of equipment.

Thanks for that mate.
That bit of encouragement (even though
it's from a stranger) is just what I need.
Cheers.

I love using the double end bag. theres not always people to mit train with, so the db bag comes in handy with slipping and combos.

My handspeed and timing with the 1-2 has gotten better since I started using the speedbag.

I use the double end bag every day that I train. I do it before I train for about 5-6 minutes. Once you get good at it, its very fun and a good workout. Use your imagination, do a jab-cross-slip to your left (as it bounces back at your face)-then left body hook-left head hook- right elbow, etc...Just have fun with it and use be inventive and you can find great ways to use it. Pretend like your sparring with someone, and avoid the punches by slipping and blocking. Also try inside work, the bag will hit you more when your closer to it, so inside work is fun to do on the double end bag.
