Attn: King Kabuki - Q. Re: Boxing
KK, really hoping for your input on this. You're advice is legit -- definitely helped me in the past, so I'm hoping it'll help out now as well.
Lets define a few things first.
I like the definition a Guro from the philipines gave to Roy Harris a while back: "Combat = it's your life, or it's mine."
Background: started primarily as a striker of the southern chinese and indo-chinese arts (including older/classical form of MT) ~ only studied full contact stuff. Got into the whole ground grappling phase like everyone else... blah blah blah.. currently study combat grappling (mostly stand up grappling) particularly td's and throws much like judo but diff emphasis -- has a lot to do w/ special forces and their combat strategies in CQB/CQC (close quarters battle) ... the system includes all of your standard strikes, but not to the technical science of boxing -- basically the system is like, strike to engage -- grab, throw/slam, stab/shoot/stomp back of neck.
KK, since you have a great knowledge of Western Boxing and MT: i've been thinking about this quite a bit... i've been wanting to add a regiment of more scientific striking than just the power strikes i've been trained to give (cuz in military combat, you need 110% commit to what you are doing). What do you think will be more beneficial for me to more properly sharpen by joining a gym: western boxing or MT? If you need more clarification to guide me properly just ask.
As for all the other viewers out there: not trying to turn this into another "worf is frustrated" Boxing vs. Kickboxing thread.
I'm trying to figure out what is more COMPATIBLE and thus BENEFICIAL to my regiment of training.
Thanks!
(haha watch i get the belt of shame for this one:
Belt of SHAME! )
ps. others specialized in the area, please chime in!

Well, this seems just like common sense to me, western boxing would be the thing to go with. You're not trying to learn anything fancy, you just want to hurt someone quickly and in close quarters. Kicks, knees, and elbows are frivolous in a real fight unless you're reeeeeeally experienced or you're fighting someone you can easily take. I've done both muay thai (a little) and western boxing (a lot) and that'd be my two cents for someone in your position.

well to spoil it all. i'm leaning to boxing cuz i have solid kicks and knees and clinch work. actually in the real world front kicks and knees/elbows are great. used them plenty. especially that front kick.. u can easily lead a crussssssssshing elbow. knees the the groin/solar plexus is also a great move in a standard clinch. i'm not huge so try to MT clinch a taller dude i stupid for me. i much rather throw them.

Well, here's my perspective (sorry it took me some time but I DO live outside of Sherdog despite how my post-count makes it seem, lol):
Muay Thai is one of the most solid striking Arts out there. It's perfectly viable, however, I've rarely seen plethoras of different "styles" of Muay Thai utilized properly. My teacher had a wierd style, wide stance, odd hand-positioning, fought more like a counter-puncher, I guess that's why we got along. But at some point most Muay Thai fighters I've ever seen become a bit cookie-cutter in their technique and what sets them apart is physical attributes or conditioning. So in essance, aside from timing, strength, speed, the physical attributes, there comes a point where your Muay Thai is as good as it's ever really going to get.
However, with Boxing, there's ENDLESS different approaches. One wouldn't think limiting onesself to only throwing hands would yield such various styles and approaches, but that's what happens when an Art is around that long and has Global viability. Everyone in the World Boxes (meaning in just about every Country) and some traits can be identifiable even to specific countries.
So if you're looking to break the mold a bit and not be cookie-cutter in your approach to fighting, learning how to throw hands properly is the way to go IMO. Once you really delve into that Universe you'll see just how vast it is, and how many ways there are to take a guy apart with just your fists. Like that one combo you said worked so well for you, that's just ONE way to get another man to do what you want him to, and it's pretty simple. Plus, if you have strong kicks and clinch work already, why refine what you're already strong at as opposed to filling the gap of one of your possible weaknesses? I've always said if you want a near invincible stand-up Fighter, take a Boxer and teach him Muay Thai, or take a Thai fighter and teach him how to Box properly. That hybrid is pretty unstoppable if one takes to it.

When you become a Mod your post-count becomes...enhanced? We log things, discuss things among each other (which counts on the board) in the Mod booth, and I also do play-by-plays in the Boxing forum on big fight nights when I'm on...plus, I actually like to have discussions on the discussion forum. Go figure. Making 1 or 2 meaningless posts no one gives a fuck about ain't my style.
I lucked into the Mod job, they just happened to need an area filled when I got it that was right up my alley. From there it blossomed, though.
