Aikido

I have an mma tournament coming up and one of my opponents does combat aikido. Does anyone have any experience against this style. I have little knowledge of it and I don't know if they have any ground training or standup only. Fight is May 31 here in Manila amatuer with the headgear. I also have to fight two Muay Thai guys but I know enough about Muay Thai to have a gameplan at least. Thanks in advance for any help.

yeah... don't let him grab your wrist....

if he does ...you have to go limp and pretend he throws you 20 feet...

but seriously... he sounds like a ground specialist so pepper him with leg kicks and punching combos.

Best,

Kokoro

My gameplan against an Aikido guy would be to punch him in the face repeatedly

Overwhelm him with quick strikes; in and out, don't let him get ahold of you. Or just go for a classic double leg and take him down, I highly doubt he is proficient on the ground.

Combat Aikido? Like Jason DeLucia? Watch out for that black magic.

If it is like Shodokan Aikido you could probably expect something along the lines of Judo as far as techniques. Depends on the school, but a lot of (good) Aikido schools focus heavily on conditioning so maybe you should expect him to be fairly strong and have good cardio.

Depending on what your skill is at everything - I'd recommend trying to keep it standing up and keep your distance, perhaps try to get some damage with some leg kicks to slow him down - just hit him with quick strikes to keep him from getting close and grabbing you. But if your BJJ is good then taking it down shouldn't be a problem.

thanks guys. I am pretty good at BJJ and I am a wrestler from PA with 13 years under my belt so I will plan to take it to the mat then.

Hey bro, I'm from manila too and I would love to watch. Please PM me the details.

As for the topic, I did some Aikido but not combat so if the rule states no small joint manipulation then 80% of his techniques are illegal. My tip is to take him down ASAP. From that on I expect you to dominate him. Watch out for some open hand strikes(which is more irritating that powerful). It might tickle you a bit but just focus on taking him down. GoodLuck Kapatid!

As has been mentioned, whatever you do DO NOT run at him with your hands extended.

It will be curtains for you pal. Ive had the oppurtunity to train with a highly ranked Aikido expert and to be honest I wasnt that impressed. He had an inflated opinion of what he could with his abilitys and upon demonstration in a "what if they do this" scenario for the class had no answer for my MT clinch which would have opened his eyes had I choosen to spin him and actually deliver knees. As it stood, I didnt want to embarass the man in front of 30 students.

Combat Aikido may be a completely different story, but I wouldnt let this "lull" you into believing its going to be a cake walk. He may very well be extremely well rounded, but its a safe bet the skills you will face from a true Aikido practitional well involve techniques from close quarters, they usually like to work off being grabbed or chased in a manner like you're trying to grab them. You should expect some type of throwing abilitys, depending on how advanced the guy is.

his main thing will be the ground honestly. if your stand up is good, box him. in and out, quick strikes. or just shoot in td and gnp

combat akidio is prob like the jason delucia stuff, some of that weird BS, but will prob be a grappler imo,i'd treat him like a really good judo guy, don't let him clinch you. also if he hops around like a ghey, you know to KTFO him
