Rival MMA Bag Glove

I purchased the Rival MMA bag gloves from Title MMA for a bargain $40 a few months ago. I did not do a review straight away as I wanted to get a good amount of use in and for the " They are new so must be great" feeling to wear off.

When I first got them, the initial reaction was that the quality was pretty amazing and they look great. With great stitching and good quality leather.

I bought the large size as I wanted to be able to fit wraps under the gloves as hitting pads or the bag you really need to wrap your hands. As you can see from the pictures they are a good fit. The section next to the outer part of my hand is quite, what I can only describe as baggy but when worn with wraps they really fit well.

The closure system is pretty standard and really holds in place. They have used a very good quality hook and loop material as well which is another plus as some companies seem to be skimping on this as or late. The double wrap also increases the support which can only be a good thing.

The biggest plus is the individual finger bars. These create almost a custom fitted feel to the glove when you make a fist. This also helps when quickly moving from punching to defending incoming pads and back to punching as they comfortably fall exactly where you need them. (If that makes sense!!)

When hitting both the pads and bag my hands felt really protected but not so much that it felt like I was punching with pillows so you got the perfect feedback from each strike.

Like many people I was not convinced about how the white print would hold up on the front of the fist area. I am pleased to say nearly 12 weeks in and the white has not dulled, faded or worn off which is great.

So all in all I am really pleased about my purchase and would really recommend these gloves for anyone in the market for a good pair of mma style bag gloves.

If I have missed anything or you have a question on the gloves please let me know.

Knee Pads: Asics, McDavid Hex, Bubble

Lots of questions lately about Knee Pads.
Here are a few that I use for comparison:

Asics Super Sleeve
Image: http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd342/johnmarkpainter/KP3.jpg
These are GREAT. They get hot but the combo of Sleeve Support and the shape of the pad conforms really well to your knee.
There are air holes on the sides and back

McDavid Hex Pad
Image: http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd342/johnmarkpainter/KP5.jpg
These are nice and compact. Lycra Sleeve. With a tight fit they will stay in place well. I use these more often as elbow pads to protect sparring partners from getting 'spiked'. Not soft enough for STRIKING.

Cheap Bubble Pads
Image: http://i530.photobucket.com/albums/dd342/johnmarkpainter/KP4.jpg
These are good for working Knee Strikes with a partner.
They are elastic all the way around and can rub your leg/knee raw when you sweat and have lots of impact so I HATE these for working on the Ground.

Triumph Heatseekers with Title Hook and Loop Converter

Much has been written already about these Gloves.
They are excellent. Nice firm padding for the heel of your hand and wrist.

I just wanted to add a separate thread about the Hook and Loop Converters with them

One big Tip...thread the Laces so that the converter is attached to the Thumb side.
(I didn't figure this out until AFTER...too lazy to change it now)
That way when you tighten the strap, the sharp edges will be on the top side and you will be less likely to cut someone with them.

That said....the Converters work well. Easy on easy off.
But the Title Logo has sharp edges and the Velcro does too...Their Hook and Loop Gloves aren't made this way so I don't know why the converters are.
I guess to keep them at $6?

I'll use these but I wish I just paid the extra money for the Hook and Loop version.

I got these gloves maybe 3 months ago.
I used them 4 or 5 days a week for a month and they started to show wear immediately.
The Leather is holding up very well but just not the stitching and inside lining

They are VERY comfortable and I like everything about them other than DURABILITY.
For someone that only trained once a week they wouldn't be bad....

The wear you are seeing on the wrist and Palm areas is from doing lots of light contact sparring and Drills where I was covering with my left framed against my head and taking punches.
But then there is also wear on the inside from my Knuckles.
I didn't wear wraps with these.

Here are the pics....

Note: This is a preliminary review.

*_About Purchase_:*

Placing an order online was easy. FightStuff has four websites, one for the US, one for the UK, one for AU, and one Global. John from FightStuff was available by email for answering any, and all of my questions. He answered many questions promptly, and efficently within 24 hours, and many times within a matter of hours. The Top King shorts that I ordered with the gloves had to be made in my size, so although additional time was required for that, overall delivery time was reasonable and shipping rates from Thailand were very good. Thanks John.

*_About Product_:*

The gloves arrived well packaged in the original factory plastic bag, and initial impressions were that these are very nice gloves. It was obvious that the gloves are an innovative design for muay thai gloves, and the design, materials, and workmanship are high quality. The full grain quality leather is smooth on the face, knuckle, and thumb areas of the glove, and a longer length cuff has a durable, supportive, well padded feel to it. The gloves are very well padded in the fist and attached thumb, and on any contact areas. The padding firmness over the knuckle area is somewhere between that of a Fairtex BGV1 glove, and a Twins Special BGVL-3 glove, being somewhat softer than the Fairtex, and somewhat firmer than the Twins.

The padding composition is what I would consider to be excellent for protection to your hands, and consistent with a well made, muay thai training glove. This glove should function really well for sparring purposes, and as an all-purpose training glove, it fills a much need void in the area of padding firmness, between the Fairtex gloves, and the Twins Special gloves. The wrist support is excellent, and the velcro hook and loop wrap around wrist strap is wide (3 inches), and strategically well placed, up from the bottom edge of the glove, and right where it should be at the base of the mitt part of the glove. Stitching is high quality, it does not wander, and it is reinforced in all stress areas.

The graphics are a "Top King" logo on the back of the glove hand, and a nicely embroidered "Top King" cloth patch, that is stitched to the outside of the wrap around wrist strap. Labels are well done, and asthetically pleasing to the eye. The internal lining is a soft, smooth, snag free, satin type material, and when the hand is slipped into the glove, there is a reinforced area where the inside of the finger tips contact the glove pocket area when making a fist. Nice thick padding is compartmentally stitched into the palm side of the cuff of the glove, to protect the inside of the wrist, and forearm areas. When you place your hand into the glove, it feels like you are putting on a well made, well padded glove, and the internal hand compartment structure, and support is excellent. The "Air" model gloves have a unique "durable" looking mesh fabric sewn into the palm area of the gloves, just below the grip bar, that should provide excellent ventilation, and greatly reduce excessive heat build up inside the gloves. The leather on the inside of the thumb also has tiny perforated holes to aid in ventilation. The glove fits well, and making a fist feels very natural.

These gloves have a number of truly innovative design features that until now have not been seen on muay thai style gloves. Two of the most obvious being the longer extended cuff, and the ventilated mesh palm area. So, I thought I would take the time to address some of the inevitable questions.

Q: Will the longer cuff increase wrist support, but at the expense of being a hinderance when clinching?

A: IMHO, the extended cuff will prove to be a "substancial" improvement to the current design of muay thai gloves for the following reasons:
The longer cuff is not the same length all the way around. It is longer on the outside edge, than it is on the inside edge, thus providing additional wrist support, and protection to the arm on the outside edge, while not inhibiting bending the wrist inward to facilitate the clinching movement. If anything the cuff design should improve clinching ability.

Q: Will the mesh palm actually improve ventilation or is it just a gimmick that will wear out faster?

A. IMHO, the answer is "yes" and "no". "Yes", I think it will improve ventilation, and "no", I do not believe it is a gimmick that will wear out faster. The mesh appears to be a quality, double layered, durable fabric, that is reinforced and well stitched in place. I believe it will greatly aid in wicking out excessive heat build up, while not substancially reducing the wear life of the gloves.

Q: What is the thumb like on the gloves, it looks kind of straight?

A: It was also a question I asked prior to purchasing mine. After getting mine, I can tell you that although the thumb looks pretty straight in photographs, I do not anticipate it being a problem at all. If you look at the third photo that I posted with one glove face up and one glove face down, and look at the glove with the back facing up and palm facing down, you will see that the thumb falls well under the extended top side edge/ striking area of the glove. When you put the glove on and make a fist, it fits neatly up against and inside that little side pocket area.

It is also an attached thumb with a good design. The attachment piece is very similar to a Fairtex BGV1 glove attachment for the thumb. That coupled with the fact that these are brand new gloves and have not been worn or broken in would lead me to say that not only is it not a problem now, it will probably take on a more curved look as the gloves are broken in. Similar to breaking in a new baseball glove.

So for anyone who is concerned about the straight appearance of the thumb, I can tell you, don't let it be a factor in not choosing these gloves. Because after seeing the gloves and putting them on, making a fist feels good and natural. I do not anticipate it being a problem what so ever. I hope this helps clear up the thumb design questions or concerns.

*_Summary Observations_: *

A lot of thought went into the design of these gloves. They truly have some innovative features. They have a very sleek design profile that reminds me of a pair of Mexican style heavy hitter gloves, without any of the draw backs of the thinner dense padding. They are sleek, innovative, well padded, well designed, well made gloves. And, one thing that I noticed is that these are without question, the "lightest feeling" 16oz. gloves, that I have ever seen. "Light", as in probably greater hand speed, and reduced arm fatigue, "light feeling." Initial impressions are that they feel like two sleek "mako sharks" on your hands.

My recommendation is: "If you don't have a pair of the Top King Air Velcro's yet." "Get some soon."

I would rate these gloves as a 5/5 stars on overall quality, features, innovative design, and price.

Note: This is a preliminary review.

About Purchase:

Placing an order online was easy. FightStuff has four websites, one for the US, one for the UK, one for AU, and one Global. John from FightStuff was available by email for answering any, and all of my questions. He answered many questions promptly, and efficently within 24 hours, and many times within a matter of hours. The Top King shorts that I ordered with the gloves had to be made in my size, so although additional time was required for that, overall delivery time was reasonable and shipping rates from Thailand were very good. Thanks John.

About Product:

EDIT ADDED PHOTOS
There is a removable panel that is the same size as the bottom of the bag....can be used as a divider. I have it sitting on top of the contents of the bag and my Gi is on top of that. Cool feature.

I am a bag 'junkie' as I am a pro Musician and Photographer.
Have bought lots of pouches, straps, bags cases....

The Hemp Canvas feels really good.
Strong but breathes and is pliable.
Really well designed. Open big compartment and useful small ones.

I loaded it up with:
Pair of Thai Pads
Pair of KO Shin Guards (big ones)
Headgear
Knee and Elbow Pads, Cup
Double Weave GI
That was all in the main compartment

THEN....
MMA Sparring Gloves in front pouches
Wraps, Mouthguard in other small pouches
16oz Gloves in End Zipper Compartment
Pair of Focus Mitts in other end Zipper Compartment
Water Bottle in netting on end.

Thats a lot of stuff in a bag.
The Strap is comfortable even when loaded like that...and there is a non-slip rubber pad on the strap.

VERY HAPPY

I will get the pictures up shortly but i ordered the Bad Boy thai pads from MMAWarehouse and so far couldnt be more happy. I will post more info on them after some use but first impression so far is what appears to be great quality leather and stitching top hadle is very comftorable and conforms to your hand somewhat. Leather seems to be of top quality and is farily hard but not terribly so. Styling is awesome and the metal buckle that the velcro strap goest through makes it easy for putting on and taking off. I picked them up for $119.

*_About Purchase_:*

Order was shipped within 24 business hours, and item was received within 2 business days. Shipping was via Fed Ex.

*_About Product_:*

The gloves arrived well packaged in the original factory plastic bag, and initial impressions were that these are "really" nice gloves. It was obvious that the gloves are professional grade, and the design, materials, and workmanship are "very" high quality. The thick, full grain, quality leather has a texture and firmness that is similar to a Fairtex BGV1 glove, on the face, knuckle, and thumb areas of the glove, and a medium length cuff with a semi-soft broken in, yet very durable, well padded feel to it. The gloves are very well padded in the fist, thumb (attached), wrist, and on any contact areas. The padding thickness is 2.5"+ over the knuckle area, and the composition is what I consider to be optimum for protection to your hands, and consistent with a well made pro quality training glove, that will also function really well for sparring purposes. The wrist support is "absolutely excellent." Stitching is high quality, it does not wander, and it is reinforced in all stress areas.

The graphics are micro injected with the "Ringside" logo on the back of the glove hand, the "IMF Tech" logo on the thumb, and a nicely embroidered "Ringside Boxing" cloth patch sewn to the cuff. The labels are well done, and asthetically pleasing to the eye. The internal lining is (Tricot) a soft, smooth, snag free material that envelopes the hand and wrist, and the internal wrist area is stitched compartmentally to prevent any shifting or clumping of the internal padding. This is an additional plus in the design, as I do not believe the type of internal padding used would be prone to clump anyway.

When you slip your hand into the glove, it feels like you are putting on a well made, well padded, professional grade glove, and the internal hand compartment structure and support is "excellent." When gloves are available with internal hand compartment sizing in addition to weight in ounces, I normally wear an x-large hand compartment size. These gloves only come in an ounce weight sizing, and fit my hands in a nice snug, secure, manner, but they are by no means too tight or overly constricting. These gloves should provide a nice fit for people of almost all hand sizes, and will take a little time to break in. I believe moisture wicking capabilities will work well, and excessive heat build up should not be a problem. The glove has the grip bar feature, fits very well, and making a fist feels very natural.

And, now on to the topic of innovative design features. This model includes the following:

* The design starts with an anatomical mold constructed to the shape of a real fist with 2.5" of protection over the knuckles.
* A specialized formula of liquid foam is then injected into the mold.
* The foam is allowed to cool and forms a single layer of thick, durable, pre-curved, protective foam padding.
* The padding provides 2.5" of protection over the knuckles.

The Ringside IMF Tech Training Gloves are not new to the market. They have a solid reputation for being at the forefront of professional quality training gloves, and seem to be one of the most universally well liked, and well respected, training gloves on the market today. I think that anyone who is interested in getting a top of the line, high quality training glove, would be hard pressed to not like these gloves.

I would rate these gloves as a very solid 5/5 stars on overall quality, design, features, and price.

I recently returned a pair of Fairtex Combat Sparring Gloves
Fairtex Combat Sparring Gloves-Combatsports.com (http://www.combatsports.com/Fairtex-Combat-Sparring-Gloves/productinfo/TG20/)

I just replaced them with Cageside MMA Safety Training Gloves
*NEW* Cageside MMA Safety Training Gloves * Black (http://www.cagesidemma.com/ncammasatrgl.html)

A few quick differences:

The Cagesides run bigger which was good for me.
Cagesides Leather is Softer.
Cagesides Padding is more tapered and wraps a bit down the sides of your hands.
The Fairtex padding kind sticks up more right on your knuckles. (You can see it in the photos)
The Cagesides Wrist straps are longer...Velcro on the front and back of the Glove and THEN the Velcro on the strap. Easier to get a snug fit.

The Fairtex Finger Loops have extra material that comes down over the pads of your hands. The PROBLEM is that design uses extra stitching and depending upon the shape of your hand, it can be very uncomfortable.
It is also much easier to wear wraps under the Cagesides.

The Thumb padding is better on the Cagesides as well.

The Cageside Next Generation MMA Pro (Fight) Glove is more comfortable than the Training Glove but I really like both of them.
I am a Cageside fan.

No problems with wraps and the fingers aren't too restricted

Double-Wrap Strap for a nice fit
