in the dojo how come those that compete are the humble ones while those who never compete tend to be arrogant? i always find that those who never compete usually brag about how good they are and who they make tap in the dojo and i never hear a competitor brag about this kind of stuff.

just wondering if this is unique to my experience or do you notice the same in your dojo?

Ok now that charity week is over, we can get back to sending out some more content for you to help you improve your grappling game. We raised over $5,300 with all of our efforts in just one week towards the fight against Cystic Fibrosis! Such a great feeling to be able to help those in need.

For those who know me, they know that guillotines are one of my top submissions. I love them and I hit them from so many different positions and so many different situations.

That's what I love about zoning in on a particular submission or move and working hard to make it my own because then it then becomes your specialty and you start discovering so many more ways to use it to your advantage.

In this video I talk about how I actually set up the guillotine submission from half guard on the bottom, especially when my opponent starts to overhook me arm that is underhooking theirs.

This set-up works so well for me because many people have no idea that I'm even about to attack for it.

PLUS I also dabble in some other concepts and ideas as well to help give you some ideas on other things you can do and ways of making your attack even better as well such as:

- Some sweep and other quick options from the same situation
- Concept of where your opponent's head should be from half guard when attacking the guillotine
- How I position my hand/arm and how I move my body when I am working to complete the submission as well.

I hope it's helpful and gives you some ideas to add to your game.

MGinAction Review

This is going to be a comprehensive and detailed review of MGinAction. So please bear with me. I’ll explain how I use the website and why I think it’s a great addition to any BJJ training regime.

But first, if you like my review and decide to check it out, please use PROMO CODE: joelovesfishin. It gives you a week free to check it out and then you can cancel.

Subscription Price: $25.00/month or $250/year (~$20.83/month)

Lets take a look at the main page when you login.

OVERVIEW:
1: Drop down menus for techniques.
2: Keyword Search.
3. Techniques Tab
4. In Action Tool Bar

The Techniques Tab (#3) is where all the good stuff is found. It’s broken down into Fundamentals, Advanced, In Action, Sparring, Drills and Discussions. I’ll discuss the In Action, Sparring and Discussions tab a little more in-depth later on.

Image: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7086/7207086860_0b1d0b65a1.jpg

HOW I USE IT:
I use the site one of two ways; first is to learn a technique and second is to watch MG spar. For instance, if I have a problem in class or if I learned a technique in class I want to review, I’ll either do a keyword search or find it in the drop down menus. As an example; if I wanted more information of "Escaping Side Control."

Image: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7229/7207086074_8fc8ee56b0.jpg

I spend a majority of my time in the Sparring Tab watching MG spar. This usually leads to some technique I want to learn more about. What’s great about this section is that it lists all the “Techniques” used by MG in the sparring session. You can find everything at the bottom of the video, so if you want to learn how to counter the Berimbolo, it’s listed right there and shows you how many videos are available.

Image: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8146/7207086652_238d243574.jpg

If you click on the “Counter vs Berimbolo” it takes you to the tabs and only shows techniques dealing with the technique. The example below shows there are 6 videos In Action, 4 videos in Sparring and 1 video in Discussion.

Image: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8015/7207086760_8a6860c7c2.jpg

IN ACTION Tab
This is the best part of this site and is an invaluable tool for training purposes. It shows MG executing the technique while sparring from different angles, different people and different set-ups. Do you see the “Load Page to Que” button on the top left? Once you click on that button, a video pops out and shows all the "IN ACTION" videos back to back to back. So you can see MG executing a Guillotine Choke 100 different ways, on different sized people, from different angles.

Image: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7091/7207086184_d64a4ddee9.jpg

DISCUSSION Tab
This is also a great resource. It’s like having a private lesson or discussion with MG. He sits and talks about why he does certain techniques or just philosophizes about BJJ. The most recent one that I gained a lot of good information from was why he prefers the “ball and socket” grip vs. the 10th PJJ Pretzel Grip in the Guillotine choke.

So there you go. Down and dirty. I think the site is worth every penny and is worth your time. If you want to try a free week, use PROMO CODE: joelovesfishin

Importance of Sleep

How important do you guys, as a microcosm (a large microcosm) of the grappling community, feel sleep is to your jiu jitsu/wrestling/judo training?

I wrestle and do BJJ 8x/week, and I lift (usually during lunch break) Mon, Wed, Fri, (2 day split: Sq, DL, OP/BP) but I haven't been able to get more than 6 hours of sleep per night due to my work schedule. Do you guys think I'll progress less quickly? Be more prone to injury? Get better and strong, but not actually aesthetically put on muscle? Etc.

Any opinions, professional or anecdotal, are welcomed-- I'm just trying to test the water on other people's experiences with sleeping less, and their body's ability to perform.

Thanks for any and all feedback!

Hi, I'm moving to Charlotte in a month and I was looking for some input on a good BJJ school in the area. I've trained for about 10 months and I'd also like my daughters aged 14 and 11 to start training. I've looked online a bit and the 2 schools that caught my eye were Gracie Barra Charlotte and Great Grappling in Ft. Mill, SC. I'll be living in South Charlotte, so I think Great Grappling might actually be the closer of the two even though it's in another state.

I'd appreciate any feedback or info anyone can give me on either of these 2 schools, or any recommendations on other schools in or around Charlotte. Thanks.

So my doctor who stitched me up here in Thailand didn't speak great English so the answer I got was not to fight for 30 days. Of course, she didn't know what Jiu Jitsu was so I said Muay Thai. I doubt I have to wait 30 days to roll, but not sure exactly how long.

So I got 7 stitches above my right eye 7 days ago. I had them removed 2 days ago. Does anyone have any experience with this? How long should I wait to roll? 2 weeks in total? Less/more? I couldn't find anything on Google.

I'd prefer answers from someone who has experienced this before, not just guesses. Thanks all.
