"A constitutional lawyer who once worked as a clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Wallace has close ties to Mississippi Republican Sen. Trent Lott. The senator hired the attorney to help him with the impeachment of then-President Bill Clinton.
As an aide to Lott in the early 1980s, Wallace intervened to prevent the Justice Department from sending federal inspectors to Mississippi jails.
Wallace also helped to write a letter that Lott sent to then-President Ronald Reagan urging the White House to side with segregated private schools in a case that involved then-segregated Bob Jones University in a case before the Supreme Court. The university was arguing that it had a right to take federal tax deductions.
Wallace's involvement in those issues was raised when Reagan nominated him to the board of the Legal Services Corp. in 1983.
"Wallace has several serious civil rights problems, even going back to his work for Trent Lott," said Leslie Prole, Washington director of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund."
