There's a couple aspects that suck about using them in traditional senses versus for forms.

I noticed this when watching the Beijing Wu Shu team.

The ones they use have shorter chains joining the links. Mine was either retarded, or not designed for easy use. It screwed together to make a whole staff and was made of ****l. But the chains for each section were longer than the ones I see, and the thing on a whole was bigger. This meant I had to use wider and more fluid motions, all without kicking my own ass.

It sucked very much bad until I got decent with it.

Though I found out through sparring with my own students that Tonfa do particularly well against it.
