Your choices in firearms and reaction to the .308 leads me to believe that you should rethink your future purchase. Think about why you want an "assault-rifle" and a handgun that screams wannabe.
For self-defense, there are better options. For plinking and general hobby shooting, there are better options. But if you have $2000 sitting around that needs to be spent, the USP and P2000 are both very nice depending on your hand size for ergonomic reasons. I'd just get a XD series Springfield, a Taurus .357, any quality entry-level 1911, etc.
If you really want something that throws rounds, look into the FN FAL, or other .308 semi's like the CETME clone.
