The AR-15 is a .223 and the AK-47 is a 7.62 / 39mm. Basicly the same size. I never shot AR-15s much, but I used to hunt with a AK, and won many running deer shoots at the local rod and gun club. No recoil and very very accurate.

No no, a .223 is a 5.56mm round. An AK round is much more simillar in actual size of the bullet, to a
.308, which is one of many different 30 caliber variations. All recoil is going to be related to the amount of powder contained in the cartridge itselt, and the weight of the firearm as stated before, IE a .38 detective special colt kicks more than a 1911 .45 (in my experience). I don't know for sure if a G36 is available in a civilian model. A good light, low recoil assault rifle is the ruger Mini-14, it is chambered for a .223 (same as G36), they are extremely well built and the action resembles that of an M14 or M1.
