Sonny, I have no scientific evidence to back up this comment but I doubt that the squats would yield the same effects as sprints. The two hardest Tabata variations that I have done are Hill sprints and sprints, I've tried squats, push ups, burpees, rowing machine, and a stationary bike, but none of those leave me as exhausted as sprints/hill sprints.
