Well Spanish people have more problems learning Portuguese than portuguese learning Spanish but it will definately help. Portuguese helps a lot. Just try to learn fast. You don't need to be fluent on your first day.
Nice to hear about your stories man. Good luck with everything. Yes food is cheap but like eletronics are amazingly expensive. I live in São Paulo so if I want to buy eletronics we usually do when we travel to the states etc. Sounds awesome man. Good luck.
