I understand your point but I think what we need to keep in mind is that MMA is a relitively new sport and many of the people who have become 'fans' of the it are only in it for the blood and brutality. Think of "just bleed" guy. He represents a lot of MMA fans. That's the mentality of many newer MMA fans/ Just bleed. These guys are never going to appreciate a fighter like machida.
Ultimatelty it's going to take time for the fans to become more educated as to what is exactly going on in the cage. I was actually impressed at the way the crowd at UFC 87 applauded the opening fight between jason Mcdonald and Demian Maia. Givew the fans in the US a good 5 years and you might actually have some real knowledgable MMA fans.
