Yes and no
A few longer training sessions a week are good to aid recovery (muscular and aerobic) as well as developing the mentality I think arises from some good distance work, and to mix in are hill sprints with longer rests and flat level sprints with varying distances and rest protocal.
They do say it's easier to make a explosive athlete fit then to make a fit athlete explosive
