I don't think the French sound particularly unreasonable on this ... the UFC isn't really aimed at them yet.
However, there clearly is substantial anti-American animus when it comes to the French sporting world. Witness Lance Armstrong, for example, and his treatment by the French press. Was he doping? Of *course*, 95% of the tour riders are doped with enough drugs to kill an ox. The French media's obsession with showing Armstrong to be a cheater is more than a little motivated by wounded national pride ... not since the glory days of Hinault/Fignon has a Frenchman been in contention for the Tour. The French are a very prideful people, and they don't enjoy the intimation that they aren't competitive.
Interestingly, people tend to hate the French for the exact same reasons they hate Americans. The two nations are quite similar in many respects ... it's just their relative power that has changed.
