The MMA rule book says if the referee determines that a fighter is not intelligently defending himself, then he can call the fight. Vera was mounted and did nothing to try to escape mount. He was pounded on for 13 sec straight with 20 more sec left in the round by Werdum from a dominant position. Therefore the referee's decision to call the fight for Werdum is warranted.

For starters, the Kimbo fight has
absolutely nothing to do with this fight. The circumstances were different and there is no need to even mention it.
Secondly, if blocking the overwhelming majority of shots thrown at you with your hands and arms isn't an intelligent defence, what is?
While I enjoy posting and debating topics with reasonable people(such as yourself) I must admit that when I heard the Big John interview on beatdown radio I pretty much made up my mind that It was a shitty stoppage. Maybe you should check it out if you haven't already.
