I'll continue to watch the occasional animated film, but I doubt I'll like any very much.

Did you say you felt sorry for someone for not being able to appreciate Westerns? Was that you?
GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES deals with post-war Japan, revolving around two children -- and not precocious moppets who are actually fully-formed adults in the guise of children -- as they try to survive on their own in an increasingly eroding society.
You think AWAKENINGS is the saddest movie ever, and it very well might be. FIREFLIES is evocative and poignant, and swims much deeper than what one would characterize as a cartoon. While Japanese cinema has turned to shit compared to what it was with Kurosawa, et al, their Anime is often amazing to behold. Such feats of imagination.
Have you seen Miyazaki's work? Satoshi Kon? I dare anyone watch TOKYO GODFATHERS or SPIRITED AWAY/MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO and not come away refreshed and inspired.
