The XFL was Vince McMahon's idea to take advantage of the exploding (American) football market and rival the NFL. They played in the spring during the NFL's offseason and managed to get a hold of some lower level NFL and NFL Europa players. Sadly, the players weren't as good as the NFL's players, they used JR and The King to announce the games, they had HORRENDOUS camera work, and overall it was way to gimmicky to keep people interested. It did really well in the ratings for the first game and then failed miserably.
By the way the X stood for nothing. It was just the X Football League.
