While I'm not going to just harp on unions, I will say I hate working in union shops. Seniority is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of no matter that someone is bad at their job they've been here for 10 years lets promote them. Well they've been there for 10 years because they suck at life and can't get another job.

I'm just too much of an individualist for shit like that. If management doesn't see fit to aknowledge that I'm better than 99% of their other employees (I'm not being arrogant, I'm just a fast learner) well then I'm going to take my natural talent for learning new things to someone else, and said employer can go fuck themselves.
On the other side of the coin, I worked for a summer at Fed Ex, which has no union. I don't know what the politics are like because I wasn't there long enough, but the pay was better. I liked the job because I knew I would only be there for a couple months. My manager told me I was the best in my area with the exception of two guys who had worked there before and came back.

I busted my ass because I didn't have t worry about being stuck there forever and I wanted a good workout. Two days before I was supposed to be done I get sent to a new area which had a different setup to help out some newbs. I ran up a platform trying to fix a jam and cracked my head on a steel beam. I bounced back and regained my bearings but felt a trickle on my head and realized I was bleeding.

Long story short, when I tried going to the hospital, the shift manager gave me shit because:

1. My doctor wanted more money from me (even though I would be going to a hospital and not to him)
2. I was 18 and a college student so I had no work ethic (he had never seen me work, and if I wanted to quit, I'm pretty sure bashing my head on a beam would be one of the last ways to pull that off).
3. I was "making him pay for my hospital visit."

The last one was utterly absurd. The insurance pays for it, so all it means to him is another check in the "somebody got injured" box. Fuck that guy. I really wanted to beat his ass, but I am much happier that I didn't kill him. Now he has to suffer through the rest of his obviously miserable life, and I think that is a much worse torture. Ok, that's it. Did any of you actually read this whole thing?
