I work in xray and you are pretty much right. Although if it is a car wreck and your shit is swollen and bruised it is a good idea. Sports related probably not.
You would be surprised by how many xrays are done to either
1 generate revenue
2 cover their ass ( hospitals/ clinics)
3 doctor just wants to make family/ patient happy
I know when I injured my knee the insurance company required it before they
would pay for the MRI exam.
