No, closed guard is underrated. I was the opposite: with short legs I never used closed guard. But not I use it all the time as a type of clinch. It should not be a static type of guard; instead I use the closed guard to push and pull a lot off balancing my opponent and making an angle for myself. I like to work arm drags and arm traps from here too, just like from standing. Sometimes the most frustrating people can be caught or swept most effectively with a good closed guard.
