I do not require my students to say anything and will not compel them to stand. I ask the class as a whole to stand and face the flag, but if a student chooses not to quietly, that is fine with me. I am a supporter of personal freedom. I just don't want them chatting or doing other activities while everyone else is solemnly facing the flag with hands over our hearts. That is rude.
