If you have a terrible acne problem, then accutane is the cure. It eliminates all the bacteria on your face.
One major side effect is that it makes your skin dry. And prepare yourself for constant peeling.
The effect of your skin drying does not remain after the prescription runs its course. It's just the side effect while taking the drug. Acutane is a prescription drug and becuase of that it will have a long list of potential side-effects. This is true for any prescription drug. This does not mean the average person will get sick. It just means during clinical trials a very small percentage of patients reported different effects. Some of the effects may infact be caused by other things those patients did, but becuase they were undergoing clinincal trials of that drug the company is forced to list that as a potential effect.

Acutane has been produced and sold to acne patients for 4+ decades. If it was a real threat it would have been pulled off the shelves. My acne problem was not that severe. It was just excessive oil on my head and back. Which caused rough, bumpy skin and small blackhead type pimples. My doctor told me I could take an anti-biotic but that would only work as long as I kept taking it. he told me I could try using topical skin products but they only work as long as you keep applying them, and they will do nothing to stop the extra oil.

He recommended a three month run of Acutane. People with severe acne usually take it six months and sometimes must take it again a year later. Apparently Brazilians have very bad acne and my doctor said they take Acutane more than any other country and it has worked miracles for them. The longer you take it the more chance your body could get sick from it. So, if you just take 2-3 months the chances of any adverse side effects are very remote.

My case: I took it for 90 days. Each month i returned to the doctor and he renewed the prescription. After one month my lips became very dry and peeled alot. But the rest of my skin became flawless becuase the oil dried up and the bacteria had no oil to eat so they disappeared. After three months my lips became acclimatized to it and they were not dry and peeling much anymore. My skin was still flawless. The doctor stopped it at three months and told me my skin looked great. He told me sometimes it works permanently and I might never have the oil problem again. But he also said sometime after five or ten years the body can revert back to making too much oil. So, some patients come back and take a few months of it again after about six years.

Anyway. It's been two years and my skin has remained almost perfect ever since. I of course get the odd pimple like a normal person. But other than that this drug worked like a miracle. And also, it only cost me $25 for 30 pills (1 months supply). So, it's cheap too.
