Shotokan has made Machida a master at barely being hit as well as contsantly being able to "out-point" his opponent. He simply took the point stops out of the equations. His style is so karate it's crazy. I'm a Kyokushin-kai of 8 years or so and their are point fighters that would whoop me with their elusiveness. We tend to fight like bulls.
GSP's mma stance is the byproduct of karate training. You can see that. It's not wrestling stance mixed with a striking stance. It's simply a low kyokushin stance. I've fought guys that struck almost identical to him.
We use leg kicks. We use knees. We train elbows (no competition). If only some of you could train with some legit badass karate-kai's you'd see how effective the art is. In most Kyokushin organization comps the, hand and elbow strikes to the head or neck are prohibited - we still train and spar with headgear - at least we did. Kicks to the head, knee strikes to the body and head, punches to the upper body, and kicks to the inner and outer legs are allowed.
Muay thai's is more complete but kyokushin brings another game. You see it in Hug and Filho. That Brazil-kick is a Rio Kyokushin-kai staple. My knees are blown from the bad stretches we did to gain that type of dexerity. Like a BJJ rubber guard player. Plus our hands our damn near unbreakable - punching wooden dummies and twine wrapped around a board. We could snap punches at a dudes face all day.
