The protest angle may have been true.
But it would've been illegal and/or opened him up for law suits.
There were people that legally bet money that Kalib would win, they might have a case.
There is also precedent for suing a 'performer' for a miserable performance (Limp Bizkit was once sued for sucking, ditto with Creed... both sued by their own fans).
So, he might've done it to protest or whatever and a lawyer, or legally minded friend, might've told him that he can't admit that it was in protest, so he thought about it for a few days and came up with this...
