It was a way of life embraced by a segment of the punk population. Minor Threat was the flag bearer for that movement. It peaked around 1982/82. It was lame.
Watch the movie "Another State of Mind". It's a movie that follows Social Distortion on tour with a straight edge band (I think Youth Brigade). It's pretty funny having a the two totally different vibes stuck together.
