Avoiding conflict that can escalate to a situation resulting in serious injury or death is wise-- it's always better to avoid bad neighborhoods, blind corners, dark alleys, and poorly-lit ATMs in the middle of nowhere than place reckless confidence in a weapon (or your fighting skill) and risk getting killed or injured. Ditto risking the expense and hassle of defending yourself in court which could result in a conviction that dogs you later in life or land you in jail and screw up your life for good because you maimed or killed some lowlife who wasn't worth the steam that wafts off your shit on a cold day stemming from a confrontation you could have avoided but instead chose to play through making a principled (but utterly pointless) stand.
That said: you think every person raped, maimed, or killed by some predatory piece of shit got raped, maimed, or killed because they had all the chances in the world to run but instead decided to stand still and become a victim? People who get by in the world preying on others learn and refine their craft, and they are stacking the odds (such as the odds of you not getting away) in their favor. When they have divested you of all other options...well, I prefer to have the option of last resort at my disposal.
