Yeah it's interesting that Almeida teaches it that way. I don't have much luck with that put it in the pocket approach for the reason you mention, the guy stays back too far (though it's an awesome way to set up the butterfly sweep, btw). Instead I use the "sweep the arm over me" approach.
I think if you got really good at the scissors sweep portion, Almeida's approach might work well, but it doesn't seem as reliable as the circling arm entrance to the backroll. It seems to rely more on timing and reaction, which if you're not some crazy good and athletic black belt, is not as good.
