Lots of different perspectives on this...here is mine.
Keep in mind that I have all 4 Marcelo Garcia volumes, Series 1 and 2 of Saulor Ribeiro, Demian Maia's set, Drysdale's set, Matt Sera's set, Cesar's Gracie Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced set, several other DVDs, and several books.
In my opinion the best beginner/white belt DVD set is the Cesar Gracie set. IMHO, it sets the basics well, and Cesar has the best english (only a slight accent) of the Gracies. This is is Basic/Intermediate/Advanced Gi set. I think he also has a No Gi set, which I have not seen. I also think that the Matt Serra set (no gi) is pretty good, if you can get your hands on it. Obviously the Ribeiro and Garcia tapes have some great set, but really is a blue belt+ level we are talking about here. As far as books, I really like Beneville's Guard and Passing the Guard books. The level of detail is great and they are good reads.
