A cross draw is good if you find yourself seated a lot (like in a vehicle) - but much like shoulder rigs, you've got to be careful not to sweep yourself when holstering/drawing.
Also most competitive shooting disciplines (steel challenge, IDPA, USPSA, ICORE, etc) do not allow them in matches due to the fact that when reholstering, a loaded gun gets pointed backwards (towards the spectators).
Ain't nothing wrong with a good strong-side hip holster. Lots of options out there in both leather (DeSantis, etc) and kydex (Blade Tech). For a secure fit I'd recommend getting one built specifically for your Ruger revolver model.
Don't be afraid to buy more than one holster to find one you like (they can be resold pretty easily on the eBay and whatnot).
Good pick on your first gun by the way, accurate, reliable, and it will last you a lifetime.
Shit - I can't believe I left out the most important part: Get a quality stiff belt. 1 1/4" can work, but 1.5" will work better.
A good belt makes packing the weight of that hog leg even easier and helps develop a consistently smooth draw. I like the 1.5" Instructor Belt from The Wilderness. I could use it to tow my car in an emergency.
