The CA legal AR's seem like a waste of time to me too, unless you're looking to use one in some sort of competition.
Why don't you look at a CA legal Yugo SKS? Sure, not as sexy as and M4, but a pretty good shooter for the money. It's heavy, and not as accurate as the AR platform, but they are reliable, inexpensive, and shoot better than most riflemen can when not sitting at the bench (which is a ***goty way to shoot a rifle anyway).

ca legal ars and aks, lock the mag in at the range, the range gets pissed if you shoot to fast anyway, when you get out in the sticks, unlock your 10 rounder, and use the 30 rounders.
sks is probally the best bang for your buck, the top loading ability is faster than loading a california legal ak or ar, when you have the mag locked.
if you sign up for gunsite your signing up with an ar-15, not an ak/sks, not a mini14/30, and for sure not with a kel-tec
