Knowledge equals work over time

Welcome to Saith's log of physics puns. As of 2009 I have 9 months (a little less since I missed a few) of BJJ experience and one submission-only tournament under my belt. So far no wins. Having said that, I fully intend to become a splendid fighter in the coming years. I don't know where my path will take me yet, but that is my path. For now, the basics:

Stats:
6'2
230 lbs (still)
Very jolly and good-natured
Like good times with-- oh wait, wrong message board.

Goals for 2008:
  • Get through a BS5x5 by the end of the year. FAILED
  • Training at Fairfax Jiu Jitsu four days a week until I am no longer a "beginner" FAILED
  • Improve my posture by sticking with my physical therapy stuff. SUCCESS
  • Gradually increase my conditioning. (maybe start with long distance stuff for 30 minutes). SUCCESS

Strength Goals:
  • Perfect my squat form. FAILED
  • Restart and stick with the Bill Starr 5x5 to completion. FAILED
  • Improve my hip flexibility, core stability, and gluteal strength to improve my form. SUCCESS
  • Be able to complete a set of 5 BW+25lbs pullups. FAILED (almost to 1 though)

Bench Press PR: 145x4.
Squat PR: 165x5.
Deadlift PR: 225x5 (fixing lower back).

Conditioning Goals:
  • Improve upper-body muscular endurance until it is up to around what the rest of my body can do. FAILED

Goals for 2009:

Okay, I've got several conflicting goals at the moment, so it's time to sit down and assess:
  • Drop to 230 lbs
  • Be able to do at least 1 full pullup
  • Be able to do 50 consecutive pushups
  • Close the CoC #2
  • Get a wrist roller and start working the full grip gamut
  • Fix my squat form
  • Work toward blue belt
  • Finish a 5x5

The weight loss goal is opposed to the lifting goals, training BJJ heavily while doing a 5x5 with any major success is highly ambitious (and likely impossible given my history with strains). So I need to prioritize these goals in a way that makes sense and is highly efficient. I think a good starting place is dropping to 200 lbs. It should take the least time and I will be able to train and eat to perform without worrying too much about putting on weight and not fitting into my clothes anymore. It also goes well with being able to do 1 full pullup since that will be easier the more weight I drop. I can also work on squat form and keep up with the high volume deadlifts to fix my lower back.

Then when I make it to 200 lbs I can start a 5x5 and go a bit lighter on the BJJ training until I finish. Then after I finish the 5x5 I can step up the BJJ training and just lift once or twice a week to maintain. With the added strength I'll be able to train harder without risking injuring myself.

So I think I have a plan. Now I just need to execute...
