I would have to say to use either a longer weapon (Stick, chain, etc) against a knife or run. Obviously in my profession I have to confront the people (Not that I really want to go aginst a knife). I keep my distance and use my Glock. We also have other tools such as Tasers or pepper spray. There is an older video called surviving edge weapons. It covers distances for attacks with knives. I know this video is accepted in Courts in California as a way to gage the threat level of a person with a knife (Distance wise).

What about a baton or nightstick? Do you carry those where you work? Would you feel comfortable using that to defend against a knife if you had it in your hand when forced into aknife situation? Do you carry a knife specifically for your job? I know that KA-Bar has a whole line of law enforcement knives that can be pulled out quickly and have a bent blade to aid in knife retention.
