Also, they're not always the best defense against knife. Saw a cat go against a guy with a bullwhip recently (weird enough to begin with). Anyway, dude had a stick and knife thing going on. With a bullwhip (Latigo) you have to have precision in strikes or espada y daga will close the gap easlily. But I'd use a Sibat (staff) all day against knife, or stick.
A longer weapon can hold off an opponent if used correctly. But if it isn't the shorter weapon will win everytime.
