You might be thinking of the (utterly pointless, risible, and funny-except-it's-true) Federal Assault Weapons Ban of 1994, in which the clueless and the hysterical got together and demonstrated one of the downsides of our democratic-republic system of governance: that just because you're clueless about something doesn't mean you can't legislate what others can or can't do with it.

Under the FAWB, a number of firearms were singled out for demonization based on a number of criteria which in many cases had little to nothing to do with the weapons' lethality, suitability as an "assault weapon" and belied little or no knowledge of what an assault weapon really is. Among these items was a "conspicuous pistol grip." You might be wondering "How does a pistol grip make a firearm more deadly?"

The answer, of course, being "It doesn't." Because that's not important; pistols, for example, more often than not have pistol grips, and they do not make them more efficient implements for killing.

What's important is making sure your hysterical constituents who know fuck-all about firearms and who think that being kinda wicked-looking makes them more lethal, know that you're serious about ridding our streets, our schools, our houses of worship, and our Post Offices of guns that have pistol grips, flash suppressors, and bayonet lugs. That way, you'll not have to ever worry about being cut down in a crossfire between warring gangs of criminals armed with weapons that use vertical stocks the way firearms which managed to kill people by the hundreds of thousands always did for several hundred years prior to pistol grips wielded by people who give you flash-bulb pupils from the harsh muzzle glare of the weapon before bayonetting you to death.

Speaking of which: I don't did vertical foregrips, but to each his own. I'd not want to sweep through a house with a scattergun without a rear one, as it helps in controlling it in such situations.
