We use those gloves for MMA sparring at my gym (the small MMA training gloves - 6/7 oz).
If you're sparring with boxing gloves, you're not sparring MMA, you're sparring stand-up. Without the ability to grip your opponent, you can't train MMA.
That said, you do need to be careful not to be swinging 100% - and you should likely wear headgear or maybe a bit of vasoline on your face if you are doing a lot of sparring.
I would make sure to have both the MMA sparring gloves and some big 14/16 ozer's always on hand, as often you do just want to spar striking with no takedowns.
