Are you kidding? Prohibition created the richest and most powerful group of organized criminals seen until the prohibition of drugs created an even richer and more powerful group of criminals.
Prohibition is HUGELY successful at raising prices and enriching powerful criminal organizations. Before prohibition, criminals were really just thieves but once alcohol and later drugs were outlawed these criminals became incredibly wealthy.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all if drug cartels the world over lobbied the US government through front groups to keep drug penalties severe. Why else would we incarcerate so many drug offenders? Follow the money, who benefits and who loses?
