By the time you reach blue belt level, especially under Rickson, you should be able to pull off armbars and simple chokes with and without a gi. I was also disappointed with McCulley's grappling abilities as well. Especially for how long he has trained with Tito and Team Punishment. Both guys were disappointing for this level of MMA competition.

No. They said several times that McCully was a BJJ black belt. They even said the name of the guy he got the belt under. Forget his name since I had never heard of him before.
