In a sword fight the only objective was/is to win and how you do it should not matter. Honor as we in the west describe it (romanticized version) is not how the samurai saw it. We in the west have this idea of honor from Arthur and the knights of the round table and we try to think of the samurai in the same way but it is not so. Samurai were crafty and self preservation was important to them as it rightly should be.
Respect for the opponent is ok but respect for their own life was more important. A lot of samurai traits have been popularized in movies which are just not true.
