Ive always been curious why two people of approximate weight and height can have noticeably different physiques. Some matches can look really odd in that while contestants are 'equal' one fighter is apparently much bigger. Does the ostensive size difference have any bearing on strength ?

Power lifters, like most in this forum- tend to be heavier than most.
For instance, a 185lb powerlifter might look smaller than a 185 bodybuilder; yet the powerlifter is almost always stronger..Powerlifters tend to build dense muscle tissue, therefore a smaller muscle will weigh more. This is the basic explanation.
Powerlifting is a more complete way to ensure muscular hypertrophy. Bodybuilders tend to have great definition, yet walk around with some intramuscular adipose tissue.
Explosive exersises and heavy weights ensure that the body gets more than just a pump from the gym, thus deep intramuscular fibers get a thorough lashing.
