I've read a few things on Musashi, and because this is all second third and fourth hand knowledge take it as such. At the time he was not considered honorable, but allthose that challenged him found out that even if he was cheap, he was damn good too. He didn't believe in the ritualistic ways of fighting, he believed that winning above all else was the most important. The book of five rings translation that I read, and I will try and find the translator and post who it was, said right in it that he believed that he wasn't a martial artist but a martialist, he didn't care about honor for the honor was in not dying. Many of his fights were with the bokken (not sure if I remembered that word right) and when his opponent bowed he would drive the bokken into their skull and kill them. Also his two sword technique that is so often portrayed in movies and the like was supposedly designed for fighting multiple opponents and I haven't read anywhere that it was actually used in a duel.
