If he seemed otherwise normal, then oh well. Seriously, you cannot cater to people with the rules if they are serious about it.
I have to assume that he was well informed about tapping and the consequences. I usually try an communicate with a look or words. Like, 'not yet?' and apply slowly under the assumption that it isn't working.
I know what you are saying and it is sad.
