Sorry, but I disagree with this.

If you turn your head around first, you are leading the kick with your shoulders, and following with your hips. You won't get anywhere near the speed or power of a spinning hook kick.

With turning kicks, you have to pick an opportune moment and use it. Commit to the kick. The kick should take less than half a second from start to finish. Either you chose the right time or you fucked up, there is no time to change your mind in the middle.

By turning your head around first, not only can everyone see what is coming from an airplane and step right behind your kick before you even launch it, but you are cheating yourself out of speed and power.

This is generally something taught by really old-fashioned TMA teachers who don't have much full-contact experience, or at least it has been in my case. Most people who have competitive fighters don't do it like that.
