Maybe it's because we are supposed to be living in The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. We, The People, are supposed to be the Force, the Power and the Law. Govt. electees are supposed to be Public Servants. We are John and Jane Q. Public. We rule, they serve...at least that's what I was taught in school. Oh, well...it sounded good at the time.
