It probably is part of their gameplan to take Chuck down to the ground. But if they rush in for the takedown from the start and keep trying to take Chuck down as fast as possible, it becomes very predictable for Chuck. Plus, with takedown defence as good as Chuck's it's going to be hard for them to go for a typical takedown and at the same time would leave them open for a KO blow from Chuck. They would have to clinch with him and go from there, but obviously that's not an easy thing to do with a fighter who keeps moving backwards, yet throwing deadly punching at the same time. So it's a little ironic that in one way, they have to strike with him for a while and surprise him with a takedown, risking to get KO'd. And in the other way, trying to take him down immediately wouldn't work since Chuck would see it coming and sprawl, leaving them open for attacks as well.

Look at the way Fedor handled Crocop. He striked with him for a long time, moving forward and trying to get the clinch. Once he was at that position he tried to take him down.
