My older bro used to do something similar, only using homemade weapons with the striking surfaces formed out of cloth-wrapped foam. It was called "Dagorhir" if I recall, and was done out in the woods dressed like D&D - type guys. Nerdy, and damned fun.
This sort of sparring looks interesting, though if I may say it looks like a lot of the weapons seemed...well, a tad "floppy," something which I think would limit the range of techniques and/or prod someone towards developing strategies which when applied with the real deal might do more harm than good.
But it's stilla good idea. I've dabbled in knife, sword, club, and short staff fighting. Mastering just a small range of simple but effective techniques and strategies could be, in my opinion, damned useful in an "oh-shit!" situation where you're outnumbered, or facing off with a guy with some sort of weapon in his hand, and you're able to get your hand on a sturdy piece of wood, or blunt object, or some such.
