They probably didn't fit in elsewhere and they leaned on MMA to be "a part" of something different. Now that MMA is going mainstream they are pissed that average dudes watch the fights and enjoy them without knowing who fought in Pancrase in 1996, so it empowers these douchey little MMA snobs because they know more "history" about MMa then most laymen.

They are kind of like Punk fans who got pissed when Green Day started getting play on the radio station.

Or better yet, they are like comic book fans who get pissed that average people can go watch X-Men 2 without knowing what happened in comic book #875 in 1992.
