Stinger in spine from sparring

Don't know if anyone has had this happen, but I got a pain I'm not used to doing some sparring (boxing) and I'm wondering if it was a sign of something more serious (more serious than taking a good shot).

The guy I was sparring had about 6 inches of height and 80-90 pounds on me (I know, but it's tough for a guy like that to get rounds in a small gym so I was giving him some). He usually works on speed and technique against guys my size so we both can get some benefit, but his shots still carry a lot of power if they connect. I am really conscious of keeping my chin tucked for this reason.

With my chin down, I tried to duck and step in and I got hit with a jab coming at a a downward angle on the top of my head, basically hitting the same angle as my neck was pointing. Since I stepped into it it had some pop and the angle seemed to go directly down my spine. I froze up for a second--not the way a normal shot does, but with my back getting a shooting pain, I was OK to move around (stiffly) for the rest of the round, but when I stepped out my back tightened up. My back was stiiff and had pain if I bent the wrong way for a couple of weeks, preventing me from doing much strenous physical exercise.

I have no problem with getting nailed and having some pain, but was this a possible danger to my neck/spine? Or, worse, does it mean that I have some neck/spine problem that got aggravated? The only time I've felt something similar was pulling a deadlift the wrong way.

Thanks in advance for any insight--sorry for the long description,.
